Tops Tackles C-Stores

Grocer plan first freestanding site
WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. -- Tops Friendly Markets will open its first freestanding convenience store and fuel station this month, according to a report in Supermarket News, with the goal of opening up to 100 similar sites.

Under the new banner of Tops Fresh Xpress, the freestanding site will differ from the 36 other fuel centers at Tops locations, the magazine reported. This new store will open near an existing Tops grocery store but not on the same property.

The 1,600-square-foot convenience store will reportedly offer traditional c-store fare, such as snacks, [image-nocss] beer and other beverages, as well as a quick-service fresh-food offering, including sandwiches.

We could see this being a 100-store chain in the near future, Frank Curci, president and CEO of Tops, told Supermarket News.

Tops Friendly Markets LLC is based in Williamsville, N.Y., and operates 126 full-service supermarkets and five franchise supermarkets. With more than 13,000 associates, Tops is a leading full-service grocery retailer in upstate New York, and northern Pennsylvania.
