MoCo Market Closing

Green' c-store ran out of money

MADISON, Wis. -- "Contemporary urban general store" MoCo Market in Madison, Wis., will close on July 5, reported The Capital Times. In a "goodbye letter" on the MoCo website, owner Megan Ramey cited three reasons for closing: Her husband, Kyle, lives in Boston, and she wants to join him there; money; and a passion to pursue other ideas in urban planning, brand innovation, sustainable business practices and ecotourism.

On the website, www.mocomarket.com, Ramey said the eco-friendly convenience store ran out of money in November and she has been renting [image-nocss] out her condo, among other things, to keep the store running. The store's supplies, including tables, refrigeration appliances and shelving, are available on silent auction on the website, according to the report.

MoCo, which stood for "modern convenience, connection and community," opened last April. It was the first shop to meet Green Restaurant Association standards, said the newspaper.

MoCo 's busiest dayparts include breakfast and late afternoons, Ramey told CSP Daily News last September. Beyond food items, the 1,470-square-foot store also sold basic groceries, health-and-beauty-care items, c-store staples such as candy and snacks, magazines and higher-priced “gadgets.” Bestselling items include Metromint water, GT 's Organic Raw Kombucha, which is a packaged beverage rumored to have cancer-curing properties, Kettle Chips and glass-bottled Coke. On average, customers spend about $7 per visit, according to Ramey.

It also offered deliveries via eco-friendly bicycle.

“I 've always wanted to open a lifestyle store,” Ramey told said last year. “I wanted to do something lifestyle-oriented that had the everyday essentials for the urban dweller.”

At the time, she planned to add to the product mix and add new services. She was also thinking about opening another location closer to Milwaukee, this one with motor fuels, she said.
