Rutter's Opens Larger Store in Fayetteville, Pa.

One of the company's greenest construction efforts to date
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. -- Rutter's Farm Stores opened the doors at its newest convenience store yesterday in Fayetteville, Pa. The 5,200-square-foot store is one of the greenest construction efforts to date by the company, it said.

"Building with the environment in mind isn't the easy thing to do, but it is the right thing to do," said Tim Rutter, president of M&G Realty, the real-estate company behind all Rutter's Farm Stores.

Rutter's environmental design includes elements intended to reduce the store's carbon footprint. A few elements of this effort include using [image-nocss] building materials harvested or manufactured within 500 miles of the construction site, a white reflective roof or "cooling roof," infrared-controlled lighting sensors, instant hot water heaters, using meadow grass and wildflowers rather than traditional landscaping, triple pane glazed windows, heaterless doorframes, an energy management system, LED lights and 22 skylights.

"We used skylights in our design first and foremost as a way to make the operation more energy-efficient, to lessen the need for artificial lighting in our store. But they also give the space a different, more contemporary feel."

The 24-hour store includes a restaurant featuring Rutter's latest menu items, including wok service and fresh baked sub and ciabatta rolls. The restaurant also has seating for 11 people.

There are eight gas pumps at the store, four of which offer diesel fuel, a dedicated diesel fueling area for tractor trailers and a two-bay automatic car wash.

Rutter's president and CEO Scott Hartman cut the ribbon to the store and presented $1,000 donations to each of three area nonprofits--Fayetteville Athletic Association, Salvation Army and Mont Alto Fire Co., added a report by The Chambersburg Public Opinion.

"We love this market. In all Franklin County, Chambersburg, Fayetteville, Waynesboro [Pa.] markets, we operate a number of different stores and we've always been welcome here and our stores do very well," Hartman told the newspaper. "For us, it's just another great spot in a vibrant area of the state."

The company decided to open at the Fayetteville location because it operates smaller stores in the area and had looked for several years to find a site large enough for one of its newer stores, said the report.

"We're very proud of green things that we're doing inside of our store," Hartman said. "We really trying to keep changing with the times, and this store represents all the things we've been working on through the years."

The 24-hour store employs about 40 people.

Rutter's plans to continue to operate another store nearby, also in Fayetteville. Click hereto visit the store's website. York, Pa.-based Rutter's Farm Stores is a family-owned and -managed enterprise that operates approximately 60 convenience stores throughout south central Pennsylvania.
