S&D on Ice

Names Esrock Partners to help catch growth wave in iced coffee category
CHICAGO -- One of the fastest growing and most profitable products in the beverage category for the last two years has been iced coffee, and it shows no signs of slowing down. According to the NPD Group, iced coffee sales in quick-serve restaurants alone increased by 38% from 2007 to 2008 after an increase of 37% for the prior year. As one of the most successful coffee roasters for U.S. foodservice, S&D Coffee has named Esrock Partners as their agency for the introduction of their new Perfect Iced Coffee line of products for foodservice operations.
Chicago-based Esrock will [image-nocss] create and produce a range of consumer, operator training, advertising, product and sales support material including online components for the new Perfect Iced Coffee system introduction. The new system uses a S&D proprietary "cold-brewed" process that produces a great-tasting, low-labor and profitable solution for foodservice operators who want to tap into that growing market for iced coffee. The iced coffee demand has proven to be a multiple-sale-per-day opportunity for operators in almost every industry segment. In fact, iced coffee is finding a major audience in morning, mid-morning snack, lunchtime and mid-afternoon snack times, said S&D. It serves as an alternative to traditional brewed hot beverages, and in many cases energy drinks too, offering foodservice operators multiple daily sales opportunities. Perfect Iced Coffee comes in six of the most popular flavorsVanilla, Mocha, Hazelnut, Caramel and Unsweetened Vanilla as well as Original.

The new Perfect Iced Coffee system from S&D is a small-footprint turnkey approach that can generate a profit of $1.25 for every 20-oz. beverage sold. The product takes less than 30 seconds to prepare and uses a blend of espresso beans, natural cane sugar and does not involve high fructose corn syrup based flavors common to other brewed systems, the company said.

"Esrock is the only agency we spoke with that proposed starting out by spending time in the field with our sales team before producing the final creative and sales support package, and that was a really exciting idea for us. Esrock came to us with some really innovative ideas that involve media options and creative that really targets that Gen Y audience we want to reach. This is a really unique product for the foodservice operator. It offers the best tasting product, the easiest preparation and a really great profit margin," said Ron Hinson, president and CEO of Concord, N.C.-based S&D Coffee.

Kevin Wilson, Esrock Partners' vice president of client services, said, "S&D is really onto a major trend with their Perfect Iced Coffee. Iced coffee moved into the 'lifestyle' beverage category not that long ago. Now it's the preferred choice for many young adults and the research shows multiple peak ordering periods. Perfect Iced Coffee attracts sales in the morning, mid-morning as a snack, lunchtime and as a mid-afternoon snack option."

Esrock Partners specializes in food and foodservice strategic planning, advertising and marketing communications.
