American Drivers Surpass 1 Billion Miles on E15

Milestone attests to the fuel’s performance, safety and value

American consumers have helped E15—a fuel containing 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline—reach a significant milestone. According to Growth Energy’s ongoing analysis of fuel sales and consumption data reported by major gasoline retailers, drivers across the United States have logged more than 1 billion miles on E15—attesting to the fuel’s performance, safety and value.

“American drivers are taking advantage of the proven performance and environmental benefits E15 provides,” said Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor. “We’re proud to celebrate this milestone and highlight the value E15 delivers in terms of better performance, reduction of toxic emissions and savings at the pump. Today, E15 is sold at more than 800 retail outlets across 29 states, and its availability continues to grow each day because 21st century drivers are demanding 21st century fuels.”

The Environmental Protection Agency approves E15 for use in any vehicle manufactured since 2001, which means nine out of 10 cars on the road today. Automakers also approve E15 for use in nearly three-quarters of new cars.

Leading retailers including Sheetz, CENEX, Thorntons, Minnoco, Kum & Go, Protec Fuel, RaceTrac, Family Express, Casey’s General Store, Kwik Trip, Murphy USA and MAPCO have all seen the opportunity with E15.

Family Express customers like the idea of using a more renewable and environmentally friendly motor fuel. “Our customers are choosing to fill up with unleaded E15 and other blends of ethanol because they are aware of the overall benefits to society. They feel a sense of pride knowing they are doing their part not only to protect the country but also support the state and local economy,” says Thomas Navarre, vice president of marketing and logistics for Family Express.

Thorntons has similarly been pleased with their customer response to the new fuel product. “We have processed over 750,000 transactions for unleaded E15 without a single reported problem,” shared Matt Nichols, project manager biofuels, business planning and analysis for Thorntons.

Customer acceptance is growing at Minnoco as well. “Customers love it; E15 represents 33% of Minnoco’s fuel sales. I would say customer acceptance is well known within the reflection of that number,” says Lance Klatt, executive director of MN SSA. “Customers like another option, plus, it’s new and trendy. Not only is E15 a great choice for retailers, but it’s even better for the consumer. It supports our local economy while promoting the future of fueling,” said Lance Klatt, executive director of MN SSA.
