AG wants to know why N.M. gas prices are so high

SANTA FE, N.M. New Mexico Attorney General Gary King wants to know why gasoline prices have remained higher than the national average across New Mexico, and he is asking the state's petroleum industry for answers to this and other related questions.

In a letter to industry suppliers, distributors and retailers, King cited a request from the 2007 state legislature for the AG to investigate certain price disparities and fluctuations in the retail gasoline and diesel markets. House Joint Memorial 42 recognizes the AG's authority to investigate the motor [image-nocss] fuel industry.

The request from the legislature, combined with numerous calls from consumers expressing concern and asking questions about continuing high gasoline prices, prompted King to request the petroleum industry to cooperate in providing explanations and answers.

Recognizing that there are many factors contributing to the retail price of motor fuels in our state, I still believe consumers have a right to know why prices are so high, why New Mexico gasoline prices continue to rise above the national average, and what to expect to pay for gasoline and diesel in the future, said King.

The AG is also asking the industry for comments on the most viable options the state and federal governments should pursue to help address the price disparities and high prices that are now affecting consumers.
