H-E-B Adds E85 in Texas

Grocery chain's sets price 30 cents below regular

AUSTIN, Texas -- The H-E-B grocery chain launched sales of ethanol-based fuel at five gas stations in Texas Wednesday.

H-E-B's E85 is at least 30 cents less expensive per gallon than unleaded gasoline, according to the company Web site, and by using this alternative fuel, Texas motorists can reduce their dependence on foreign oil.

Wednesday morning, one of the H-E-B sites was selling E85 for $2.40 a gallon, below the $2.80 for regular unleaded.

Curious drivers were more than interested in the [image-nocss] new offering, according to a report in the Austin American-Statesman.

I've been waiting two months for this, Rhett Humphrey told the newspaper while filling up his Ford Explorer with E85. If I can burn ethanol (instead of regular unleaded gasoline), it's better.

E85 is a blended fuel that includes 15% gasoline and 85% ethanol, which is produced from corn and other grain products grown in the United States. E-85 can be used in flex-fuel vehicles, which automakers are manufacturing more of today.
