Schenectady County Fails to Connect the Dots

Station owners weren't informed of tax change

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Gas station owners in Schenectady County, N.Y., said they were unaware that the county's gasoline tax cap had been done away with, and that they may now wind up paying thousands of extra dollars because of it, reported WTEN-TV.

Station owners said they have no problem with the gasoline tax cap being removed, they just wish that they had been told right away.

I think it's unfair to go back and say, well, December 1, even though you weren't collecting that tax, you're gonna' have to pay it', Mac Brownson, president [image-nocss] of the New York State Association of Service Stations & Repair Shops, told the news outlet.

But that is exactly what has to happen now, Brownson said.

In October, county legislators decided to do away with the capa move that went into effect on December 1. Stations were not notified until December 9, the report said.

And that's the problem, stations that were not aware of the removal failed to charge the 4% county sales tax, for 45-cents of every gallon that was pumped, said Brownson. It might not sound like a lot of money, but do the math and it adds up.

He added, if you take a typical station that might do between 25,000 and 50,000 gallons during that time perioda penny a gallon if $500and that's money that he or she is going to write a check for to the county to make up the difference in the tax change.

Brownson pointed the finger at County Legislators for dropping the ball, said the report. Legislature Chairwoman Susan Savage, however, told WTEN that the State Department of Taxation & Finance is in charge of notification.

It doesn't matter whose fault it is, but we didn't know about it, said Brownson.
