Sheetz Receives Renewable Energy Council Leadership Award

Chain recognized for green efforts

YORK, Pa. -- Sheetz Inc. was presented Tuesday with the Renewable Agricultural Energy Council Leadership Award at a conference in York, Pa. Governor Edward G. Rendell selected Sheetz to receive this honor based on the company's pioneering efforts at renewable energy and biofuel development and deployment in Pennsylvania.

"Sheetz, Inc. is honored to receive the Renewable Ag Energy Council Leadership Award," said Louie Sheetz, executive vice president of marketing for the Altoona, Pa.-based retailer. "We are excited to be the first chain retailer in Pennsylvania [image-nocss] to offer E85 ethanol, an environmentally-friendly, renewable fuel option for our customers. We thank Governor Rendell for his vision and leadership in driving Pennsylvania's commitment to energy diversification efforts, renewable fuel production and infrastructure development."

Environmental Protection Secretary Kathleen A. McGinty said, "Supporting alternative energy technologies positions Pennsylvania to capture a market for the development and deployment of a whole new generation of power sources and fuels, putting residents to work in dynamic new manufacturing sectors and improving the environment. Environmental protection is driving economic development."

Dennis Wolff, secretary of the Department of Agriculture, presented Sheetz with the leadership award on behalf of the Renewable Ag Energy Council. The Renewable Ag Energy Council was created in 2005 by Governor Rendell to coordinate the development and deployment of agricultural energy industries in Pennsylvania. The leadership award was presented at a conference entitled "Bio-fuels: A Pennsylvania Reality," featuring nationally recognized experts in biodiesel and ethanol research and production.

E85 is available at three Sheetz locations in the Pittsburgh area through a collaborative partnership with General Motors Corp., VeraSun Energy and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

This summer, Sheetz began selling E85 at its Pleasant Hills store in Monroeville, Pa., and at its Robinson Township, Pa., store.
