C-Stores: Community Stores

Report reinforces retailers' local role

DELHI, India -- The convenience stores in the neighborhood of America are great supporting business to the people residing there, according to data gathered by RNCOS Research for its recently published report, State of the U.S. Convenience Store IndustryA Market Analysis (2005). On average, each of the stores generates more than $2.7 million in annual grocery, foodservice, gasoline and merchandise sale. Each c-store employs at least 10 local citizens. The stores enable monetary and in-kind support to charities, youth and other community activities.

U.[image-nocss] S. c-stores have other advantages, RNCOS's report said. The sales and tax collection generate revenue at every level of the country's governmentcity, county, state and federal. These taxes and excise collected are on products like fuel, tobacco products, alcohol products and packaging.

Owners and employees of c-stores belong to the community that the store serves, and they live in the vicinity. These stores support numerous national and local charities and community programs such as sponsoring Little League teams, contributing to annual charity drives and organizing events for the community they serve.

There are other groups of people like business travelers, sales professionals, technicians and other workers who rely on c-stores for various things beyond their morning paper, coffee and fillup. C-stores provide phone, fax and Internet services and gain significantly to both parties' businesses. Three out of every four stores offer ATM services, as also money order services provided in 79% of the stores.
