Maritime, Sheetz, Petro, Ultramar keep up the giving

ROCKLAND, Maine -- Maritime Energy's Maritime Farm Stores has participated in the Maine Department of Health & Human Services Christmas Child Program. Employees were given the opportunity to donate money, gifts and basic necessities to local area children to give them a better Christmas season. Maritime employees were paired up with a family and a "wish list."

"I never ceased to be amazed how generous people can be especially when children are involved. I am proud to be associated with such a caring group of people. Through the generosity of our [image-nocss] employees, we were able to give our two 'holiday children' coats, hats, ski pants, gloves as well as other clothing articles and, of course, toys, said Barbara Hersey, fuel manager at one of the Rockland, Maine-based chain's nine locations.

Altoona, Pa.-based Sheetz Inc. showed its support for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) state football championships on December 14 and 15 at Hershey Park Stadium in Hershey, Pa. Teams from all over the state traveled to Hershey to compete in the A, AA, AAA and AAAA state football championships.

"We are really pumped up about supporting such a big event," said Louie Sheetz, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Sheetz. "We have always been a company devoted to the communities where our employees and customers live and work. Our founder, Bob Sheetz, credits much of his success in life to his involvement in youth sports as a child. So, we are always looking for ways to support youth sports. We are thrilled to be part of the PIAA state football championship games."

Fans were able to visit the Sheetz Hummer inside the stadium for a chance to spin the prize wheel. Representatives from Sheetz were on hand to give out thousands of prizes including key chains, coupons, Z-cards, t-shirts, and other prizes. In addition, fans could register for a chance to win an iPod touch at each of the four games.

Sheetz supports thousands of youth sports and development activities across a six state operating area.

Petro Stopping Centers, El Paso, Texas, raised more than $106,000 for the children of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in October through the 16th annual Halloween Promotion. During the promotion, employees at participating Petro Stopping Centers and Iron Skillet Restaurants asked patrons to make a $1 donation to St. Jude to support its fight against catastrophic childhood diseases. In return, the donors had the opportunity to write their names on pumpkin-themed pinups, which were displayed through the month of October.

And Montreal-based Ultramar Ltd.'s Ultramar Foundation recently distributed $400,000 to 70 children's charitable organizations in communities where the company operates. The funds were raised through an August golf tournament at the Saint- Rapha al Golf Club on ale Bizard. The community organizations that received the donations offer a variety of services, from safe shelters for abused children, the distribution of breakfasts, warm meals, school supplies and homework assistance to disadvantaged children, support for prenatal health care to the purchase of medical equipment for hospitals providing care for sick or handicapped children.

Ultramar, a subsidiary of San Antonio, Texas-based Valero Energy Corp., owns and operates a refinery that currently has a production capacity of 215,000 barrels of oil per day, at L avis, near Quebec City. It markets gasoline and diesel fuel via a network of approximately 1,000 gas stations and convenience stores and 85 cardlocks for the trucking industry, in addition to selling home heating oil to some 150,000 customers.
