Kroger Scales Back Fuel-Rewards Program

Old program was too complicated, grocer says

TOLEDO, Ohio -- A fuel-rewards program at Toledo, Ohio-area Kroger Co. stores is changing, giving customers smaller discounts on gasoline, reported The Toledo Blade. The new program, which starts May 1, provides 10 cents off a gallon for each $100 spent in the store.

Kroger officials said the new plan makes it easier on shoppers, some of whom complained that the old program was complicated. Spokesperson Dale Hollandsworth called the switch better for the average customer.

Customers with Kroger Plus cards get an automatic three-cents-per-gallon [image-nocss] discount.

For the last several months, though, a customer who spent at least $150 on groceries in a month was entitled to a 10-cents-a-gallon discount on four fillups the next month, the report said. Bigger discounts were available if the customer spent more money, it added.

The new program gives customers a one-time 10-cent discount for every $100 spent.

The discount is good indefinitely. Other 10-cent discounts can be earned, but only one can be used per fillup.

If you spend $100 on 10 shopping trips, you earn 10 fillups at 10 cents off, Hollandsworth told the newspaper. It's a lot easier to understand.

The three-cent discount for people using a Kroger card still applies, but it is not given in addition to a 10-cent discount.

Giant Eagle offers a three-cents-a-gallon discount to any customer carrying one of its store Advantage Cards and adds three cents to any 20-cent discount it provides. A spokesperson told The Blade that it plans no changes.

Meijer links gasoline savings to specific items in the store, which when purchased, produce $1 or $2 saving on a customer's gasoline bill. The company has no plans to change it, it told the paper.
