Alliance launches ultra low-sulfur diesel site

WASHINGTON -- The Clean Diesel Fuel Alliance has launched www.clean-diesel.org to provide comprehensive information about the nationwide transition to ultra low-sulfur diesel (ULSD).

Many public and private organizations are collaborating through the alliance to facilitate the introduction of ULSD. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), engine, vehicle and component manufacturers, all sectors of the petroleum industry, and fuel consumers, such as [image-nocss] truckers, are providing comprehensive information and technical coordination.

New EPA standards require a major reduction in the sulfur content of diesel fuels and emission levels from diesel engines and vehicles. To meet EPA standards, the petroleum industry will produce ULSD fuel, a cleaner-burning diesel fuel containing a maximum 15 parts-per-million (ppm) sulfur. By June 1, 80% of highway diesel produced or imported will be ULSD replacing most low sulfur diesel, containing a maximum of 500-ppm sulfur.

In 2030, when the heavy-duty vehicle fleet has been completely replaced with vehicles equipped with cleaner-burning engines fueled by ULSD, annual emission reductions will be equivalent to removing pollution from more than 90% of today's trucks and buses.

Members of the Clean Diesel Alliance are Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, American Petroleum Institute (API), American Trucking Associations, Association of International Automobile Manufacturers, Association of Oil Pipe Lines, Diesel Technology Forum, Engine Manufacturers Association, Independent Liquid Terminals Association, Manufacturers of Emission Controls Association, National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS), National Automobile Dealers Association, NATSO Inc., National Petrochemicals & Refiners Association, National Tank Truck Carriers Inc., Petroleum Marketers Association of America (PMAA), Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America (SIGMA), Truck Renting & Leasing Association, EPA, DOE, U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and Western States Petroleum Association.
