Radiant gets security okay for POS

ATLANTA -- Radiant Systems Inc. announced yesterday that the latest version of its point-of-sale (POS) device has received what it calls independent validation under Visa's best practices rules, meaning the product has met standards set by the San Francisco-based credit card company's new data-encryption guidelines.

In an effort to stay ahead of increasingly stringent, data-security mandates from Visa and other credit card issuers, Radiant engineered its latest POS product to comply with issuers' pending standards.

One of the [image-nocss] issues that compliance raises is transaction speed, said James Hervey, a spokesperson for the Atlanta-based Radiant. Part of what Radiant and other suppliers will have to contend with going forward is how implementing the new encryption rules can impede transaction times.

All of these security measures are by their nature going to slow down the system; anytime you secure something, you make it harder to get into, Hervey told CSP Daily News. As we continue to make investments into our product line, we address this issue. So while we become more secure, we continue to maintain our edge with regard to fast payment times.

Radiant brought in an independent auditor, AmbironTrustWave Inc., Chicago, to validate its system for the Payment Applications Best Practices guidelines under Visa's Cardholder Information Security Program, also referred to as CISP.

Radiant [POS] is not only safe, but also the fastest solution in the industry, said Mike Finley, vice president of global marketing for Radiant's global petroleum and convenience retail division. With less innovative [POS] providers, increased security and encryption can be detrimental to speed of service. But we've invested in a generation of products that improves both speed and security at the same time.

Protecting the consumers' card data is the shared responsibility of retailers, card processors and payment systems providers, said Mark Schoen, president of Radiant's global petroleum and convenience retail division. Radiant is committed to working with our clients and partners to ensure that together, we can provide these assurances to the consumer.

Radiant officials say the company's POS product is among the first c-store applications to receive validation under the Visa program.
