Wawa Raises More Than $20,000 for Wertz Scholarship Fund

Collection to benefit fallen officer's sons

READING, Pa. -- Wawa Inc. said that it has presented a check for more than $20,000 to be donated to the Officer Wertz Scholarship Fund. Reading, Pa., Police Officer Scott A. Wertz was killed in the line of duty on Aug. 6, 2006, and a scholarship fund was set up for his two young sons.

From August 7 to August 16, all seven Wawa stores in Berks County collected money for the fallen hero's family. Through the generosity of the community, Wawa raised more than $15,156.37 in store collections; Wawa will donate an additional $5,000 to the scholarship fund [image-nocss] bringing the total to more than $20,000.

The community has come out in droves to support the Officer Wertz scholarship fund, and you can really feel that our community wants to help ease this loss in any way they can, said John Wyotko, general manager of the Wawa in Wyomissing, Pa.

We were all shocked and saddened by the loss of Officer Wertz and here at Wawa we felt it both a duty and a privilege to help his family at this time, added Howard Stoeckel, CEO of Wawa. On behalf of Wawa, we thank our customers and the community for their support.
