QT's Bold Billboard

In the battle between health food and junk food, QuikTrip chooses delicious
TULSA, Okla. -- QuikTrip has gotten refreshingly honest with its health claimsor, rather, lack thereof, according to a BNET blog report. The convenience store chain's new billboard campaign acknowledges that junk food is bad for you, but still delicious. "Life's too short for oatmeal," it says, next to a bigger-than-life sized picture of a sticky bun.

This approach is much more honest than putting a green "Smart Choices" checkmark on junk food on grounds that it might be healthier than other junk food, the blog post states. Plus, it's much less likely to run into legal troubles.[image-nocss]

Though as one blogger points out, oatmeal can be delicious too, and if made with enough sugar and other ingredients, it can almost qualify as junk food by itself.

Asked if the blog post correctly reflects QuikTrip's intent with the billboard campaign, spokesperson Mike Thornbrugh told CSP Daily News, "Everyone can interpret how they wish. I would say the campaign is working, because people remember QuikTrip in a favorable way."

The campaign is not the first time QT has been blunt in its advertising. About its foodservice offering, its website boldly claims: "You're not going to find lobster, steak or clam chowder at QuikTrip. What you will find is a wide variety of great food and snacks."
