Awards scholarships, launched fundraising events

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Learning with Love's Scholarship fund awarded $40,000 in scholarships to employees and dependents for the 2011-2012 academic year. Meanwhile, the travel-center chain has begun asking customers to purchase $1, $5 or $20 heart icons as a fundraiser for 89 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

The Learning with Love's Scholarship fund was established to support a cause important to the Love family, education. The program is administered by the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, which includes the final selection of recipients and disbursement of funds provided by the Love Family Affiliated Fund. Established in 1999 through the contribution of property, the Love Family Affiliated Fund provides a way for the family to make charitable gifts to the causes they care about.

The Learning with Love's Scholarship is a $2,000 award for employees attending college part-time or a $4,000 award for employees or dependents attending college full-time.

Five employees and seven dependents were selected for the Learning with Love's Scholarship, including Steven Brazil from Love's in Albuquerque, N.M.; Sarah Aisha Naji from Love's in Rolla, Mo.; Stephanie Magana from Love's in Yuma, Ariz.; Mary Anne Miller, risk management analyst; and John Mark Dadulo, accounting clerk. Other winners include Garrison Lawrence; Anthony Drakeford; Michael Waltman; Haley Withers; Andrew Dixon; Jacob Stepec and Lee Ann Sturm.

Meanwhile, Love’s is raising funds for the Children’s Miracle Network by selling the hearts, as well as holding bake sales, pumping gas for tips, conducting in-store drawings and coordinating other fundraising events. In 2010, Love’s raised $1 million at more than 265 locations.

Like all Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals fundraisers, the funds raised from Love’s five-week campaign will help create miracles by funding medical care, research and education that saves and improves the lives of 17 million children treated at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals each year.

Love’s has been a partner of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals since 1998, raising funds for children’s hospitals through multiple fundraising campaigns totaling more than $4.5 million.

Founded in 1964 by Tom Love, Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores is based in Oklahoma City, Okla., and remains entirely family-owned and -operated. With more than 270 locations and 100 truck tire-care centers in 39 states, Love’s approximate growth rate is 20 stores per year.
