NACS Launches New Tamper-Evident Label Program

Can help retailers identify potential security breaches
ATLANTA -- NACS has launched "We Care...About Your ID," a new program to help members develop preventative measures against ID fraud. The program was introduced during the NACS Show in Atlanta.

Central to the security education and training program are tamper-evident labels, developed by TydenBrooks, which can help retailers identify potential security breaches if skimming devices are inserted at fuels dispensers or other unattended PIN-entry devices.

The security labels are to be used on fuels dispensers near the credit/debit card transaction area. If the label is [image-nocss] lifted to insert a skimming device, a "void" message appears on the label, providing a visual alert to store employees so that additional action can be taken. Because the labels clearly indicate that they are to prevent tampering, the labels help assure customers that their data is secure, and discourage criminals targeting the store.

"With reports of skimming on the rise, these labels provide a simple and cost-effective way of implementing a security 'best practice' to reduce the likelihood of fraud," said NACS director of products and services Doug Spencer. "These labels can be used at fuels dispensers and any other cash-related transition areas such as ATMs and vending machines, or to protect overnight storage of transaction materials."

The labels also can help retailers address some of the PCI compliance mandates that are now required.

Founded in 1961 as the National Association of Convenience Stores, NACS is the international association for convenience and petroleum retailing, representing more than 2,100 retail and 1,500 supplier member companies. The U.S. convenience store industry, with nearly 145,000 stores across the country, posted $511 billion in total sales in 2009, with $328 billion in motor fuels sales.
