Wawa Cheers on Philly Race for Cure Participants

Retailer sponsors Susan G. Komen event for 19th year
PHILADELPHIA -- Wawa Inc. said that, for the 19th straight year, the company is sponsoring and cheering on the Susan G. Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure, a fundraising event held annually on Mother's Day that is dedicated to fulfilling the promise to save lives and end breast cancer.

Wawa not only served as the race's primary local food sponsor for the 18th year in row, but also hundreds of Wawa volunteers stood by to boost up race participants and their supporters with Wawa food and beverages at the company's food tent.

As part of Wawa's sponsorship, Wawa donated [image-nocss] Wawa goods, including 50,000 bakery items; 30,000 Wawa beverages; and water, snacks and fruit. All of the items will be used to energize and quench the thirst of the race participants who will spend Mother's Day (rain or shine) banding together to raise awareness and to fight for a cure.

"For nearly 20 years, we have committed ourselves to this event and we've enjoyed every minute of it. It's inspiring to watch our associates and the thousands of volunteers, survivors and their supporters take part in this event and we're truly humbled to do what we can to help each and every participant and their families in the race for a cure," said Howard Stoeckel, Wawa's president and CEO. "Breast cancer has touched the lives of countless individuals in the communities we call home and we proudly stand behind the Race for the Cure to save lives and eradicate breast cancer forever."

Wawa Inc., a privately held company, opened the first Wawa Food Market in 1964 as an outlet for dairy products. Today, the Wawa, Pa.-based company operates more than 580 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
