Mars, Wrigley Ask NFL Fans to Pick Sides in Sweet Rivalry

'Candy Bowl' pits Snickers against Skittles
CHICAGO -- Mars and Wrigley may be new best friends, but they are asking fans to take sides.

Unveiled as the latest football rivalry, Mars Chocolate and Wrigley's "Candy Bowl" challenges fans of all 32 NFL teams to declare their allegiance to one of the company's iconic candy brands—either Team Snickers or Team Skittles.

Fans are asked to proclaim their favorite brand for a chance to win tickets to a 2017 regular season NFL game of their choice. In addition, fans will have the chance to win one of 50,000 prizes, including Team Snickers and Team Skittles apparel.

"Everyone loves a little friendly competition, on and off the field," said Matt Montei, senior director for Wrigley U.S. Confections.

"When it comes to game day, everyone has their favorite treat to fill their 'Candy Bowl,' " said Allison Miazga-Bedrick, Snickers brand director. "Now, fans will have the chance to show how loyal they are to their favorite candy."

Earlier this month, Mars Inc. announced it had acquired 100% interest in Wrigley, buying the minority stake that had been held by Berkshire-Hathaway. It said it would combine its chocolate and Wrigley segments to create Mars Wrigley Confectionery. The integration will be phased in during 2017, and until then, the businesses will operate separately. But obviously the two entities are getting acquainted and joining efforts to sponsor some competition in the candy aisle.

Fans can participate in the challenge between Dec. 12 and Feb. 27, 2017, by texting the image or the approved keyword of their choice to 87654, or by visiting www.candybowl.mars.com.

Retailers nationwide are offered "Candy Bowl" displays to promote the friendly rivalry.

Mars Inc. is a private, family-owned business with more than a century of history, $35 billion in sales and brands such as M&M's, Dove, Snickers and Twix. Mars is based in McLean, Va.  The new Mars Wrigley Confectionery will be based in Chicago, longtime home of Wrigley and its brands, including Doublemint, Juicy Fruit and Extra gums.
