Construction is underway for Sheetz’s first convenience store in Michigan. The company has plans to build up to 60 locations in the Detroit area over the next five to six years.

The groundbreaking was held Thursday at 33380 Wick Road, Romulus, Michigan, which is located between Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan, and near the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. The c-store is projected to open later this year, Sheetz said.

“Michigan is the first new state for Sheetz in two decades, and we cannot wait for people to experience this first store and everything our company has to offer,” said Travis Sheetz, president and CEO of Sheetz. “We look forward to creating great jobs for Detroit-area residents, providing total customer focus for our community members and being a good neighbor that is actively involved in every neighborhood our stores will serve.”

Once open, the Romulus store will feature indoor and outdoor dining options, drive-thrus and robust grocery options, Sheetz said. Its made-to-order food and beverage menu includes breakfast, subs, sandwiches, salads, pizza, coffee, cold brew, milkshakes, smoothies and more. Some stores also feature electric vehicle (EV) chargers.

  • Sheetz is No. 12 on CSP’s 2023 Top 202 ranking of U.S. convenience-store chains by size.

Each store will employ about 30 people, most of which will be full-time, Sheetz said. The Altoona, Pennsylvania-based retailer also said it is committed to being a good neighbor in the community. It is a long-standing partner of the Special Olympics and, through its Made-to-Share program, Sheetz works to provide hunger relief through weekly food donations to local food banks, financial assistance and more.

Sheetz has more than 720 stores across Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and Maryland, with locations open 24/7, 365 days a year. In addition to Michigan, Sheetz has also announced plans to expand in Ohio and western Pennsylvania.
