Fresh & Ready Foods is voluntarily recalling four torta sandwiches that contain cotija cheese that were sold in convenience stores and other outlets in Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah. The recalled products were distributed between Jan. 21 and Feb. 6 and have use-by dates ranging from Jan. 27 to Feb. 22.
The four Fresh & Ready sandwiches are: Ham Torta Sandwich, Chicken Torta Sandwich, Sprig & Sprout Ham Torta Sandwich on Telera Roll, and Jack & Olive Ham Torta Sandwich on Telera Roll.
This voluntary recall is being initiated as a result of the Modesto, California-based Rizo-Lopez Foods Inc. recall of cotija cheese due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes and associated with an outbreak the FDA is currently investigating, San Fernando, California-based Fresh & Ready Foods said.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, a Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
