Stewart’s Shops has acquired all four Sliders Food Mart convenience stores in northern New York State, expanding its presence in that area.
The Ballston Spa, New York-based c-store chain sold one of those four locations—in Lowville, New York, where Sliders Food Mart was based, Robin Cooper, public relations manager for Stewart’s Shops, told CSP. “We already have a great location in Lowville,” he said. “We didn’t need a second.”
The acquisition gives Stewart’s Shops new stores in Harrisville and Croghan in Lewis County and Clayton in Jefferson County, the company said on its website. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Clayton and Croghan stores are already operating as Stewart’s Shops, Cooper said. The Harrisville location is currently being converted and is expected to open as a Stewart’s Shops by the end of November.
“This expansion is part of Stewart’s commitment to continue identifying communities throughout New York, Vermont and New Hampshire where fresh food, beverages, gas and other essential services are needed to support communities,” the company said on its website.
“Two of the stores are brand-new markets for us, Croghan and Clayton,” Cooper said. “We were in that area but not in those communities. They’re great locations.”
Stewart’s Shops has a location in Harrisville, but the Sliders Food Mart is a “much better location, so we’re renovating their property and we’ll be moving into that,” Cooper said.
- Stewart’s Shops is No. 22 on CSP’s 2025 Top 202 ranking of c-store chains by U.S. store count.
Cooper said the new Harrisville location is bigger and “has more room for cars to get in and out, more space for gas, drinks, beverages, everything. It’ll just be a much bigger program for us.”
Stewart’s Shops will close the old Harrisville location once the new one opens, Cooper said.
“I think we actually got somebody that’s interested in buying it, but it won’t be a convenience store,” he said.
Stewart’s, a family- and employee-owned convenience store chain, now operates more than 400 shops in three states.
Founded in 1945, Stewart's Shops chain operates in upstate New York, New Hampshire and southern Vermont.
While Stewart's Shops is mostly owned by the family of chairman William Dake, employees also own about 40% of the company through an employee stock ownership (ESOP) plan. It is known regionally for its milk, ice cream, coffee, to-go food, gasoline and other convenience items. The company has an extensive production, distribution and warehousing network that supplies its stores.
