GetGo Piloting Redbox

Retailer testing DVD kiosks in five c-stores

PITTSBURGH -- Supermarket and convenience store retailer Giant Eagle Inc. is installing redbox fully automated DVD kiosks at its Pittsburgh-area GetGo c-store locations. Giant Eagle is taking part in a test with redbox to provide an expanded one-stop shopping experience at five area GetGo stores beginning this month.

We are very pleased to test redbox DVD rental kiosks and make such a convenient service available to our customers, said Giant Eagle vice president of fuel and convenience store operations, Dan Pastor. The quick, self-service transactions [image-nocss] and $1-per-night price make a perfect fit for our customers' on-the-go lifestyles.

Each fully automated kiosk holds more than 500 DVDs, representing 50 to 60 of the newest movie releases, with new titles available every Tuesday.

Consumers simply use a touchscreen to select their favorite movies, swipe a valid credit or debit card and go. Customers can keep the DVD for as long as they'd like for $1 per night plus tax. After 25 nights, rental charges cease and the DVD is the customer's to keep. For added convenience, customers can visit http://www.redbox.comto choose their favorite title online and pick it up immediately at the redbox location of their choice.

The GetGo test expands the presence of redbox in the convenience store category, introducing more consumers to the $1 per night price point, said Greg Waring, vice president of marketing for redbox. Redbox continues to gain momentum in the marketplace as we offer consumers a quick, convenient way to rent their favorite titles.

For the initial pilot period, GetGo stores in Shadyside, Lawrenceville, Sarver, Brentwood and Wilkinsburg will feature the redbox DVD kiosks. Should the test perform well, Giant Eagle will evaluate expanding the kiosks in Pittsburgh and its other markets.

Redbox Automated Retail LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of McDonald's Corp. and the largest purveyor of automated DVD rental machines nationwide, features more than 1,800 locations and has rented more than 25 million DVDs to date, it said.

Giant Eagle, with approximately $6.2 billion in annual sales, has 146 corporate and 71 independently owned and operated supermarkets in addition to more than 115 fuel and c-stores throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, northcentral West Virginia and Maryland.
