SIGMA to award $28,000 in scholarships

RESTON, Va. -- The Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America (SIGMA) has announced that a total of $28,000 will be awarded to 13 deserving students as part of the 2008 Pay It Forward Scholarships through sponsorships by Energy Recruiters Inc. (ERI), DTN and Caliber Consulting.

ERI contributed $20,000 to this year's scholarship, while DTN contributed $5,000 and Scholarship Coordinator Ken Gunn from Caliber Consulting contributed $3,000.

There will be one $4,000 recipient, four $3,000 recipients, four $2,000 recipients [image-nocss] and four $1,000 recipients.The 13 scholarships will be awarded to the chosen candidates in early September 2008.

"SIGMA is pleased to offer a scholarship program designed to assist in the education of marketers' employees, their children and dependents of employees," said SIGMA executive vice president Kenneth A. Doyle.

"What fun it is to make the call and tell a student they have been awarded a scholarship. They provide their time in volunteering; we reward that effort with a scholarship. It is a win-win situation!" added Gunn.

SIGMA is a national trade association representing independent chain retailers and marketers of motor fuel, both branded and unbrand. Representing about 250 member companies, SIGMA's mission is to benefit its members by ensuring a free and unencumbered economic environment for the fully competitive marketing of motor fuels.
