Several of the key highlights from the progress report are as follows
- As of June 30, 2012, the CTP has contracts with 37 states and the District of Columbia to conduct retail inspections to ensure compliance with the federal tobacco regulations. Of the more than 82,000 store inspections, approximately 96% of retail stores have passed the inspections. In addition, some 3,300 warning letters have been issued by the CTP for initial retail violations and more than 200 civil money penalty complaints filed against retailers seeking a fine for violating the law.
- The CTP implemented a new 12-month program called the FDA Tobacco Regulatory Science Fellowship as a residential scientific program to further define and develop the field of regulatory science as it relates to the regulation of tobacco products.
- The CTP has issued a request for proposal to fund new research on little cigars to determine if flavored little cigars, due to their appearance or type of tobacco used, are more likely to be depicted as and consumed by tobacco users as a cigarette.
The progress report also provides an update on the appointment of a CTP deputy director, meetings with industry members on the research and development of tobacco products and a guidance document for those companies seeking to market a tobacco product as modified or lower risk.
