Pilot Flying J is deliberate in its innovation. When the chain rolled out its mobile app, it included basic features such as mobile fueling and route guides. In 2018, the company expanded the app’s capabilities to include the ability to reserve showers, followed by parking space reservations. Pilot expanded these features to even more customers when it used cloud technology and APIs (application programming interfaces) to encourage trucking companies to put Pilot’s app capabilities into their own apps.
Then in 2019, Pilot expanded the app further to facilitate different experiences for a variety of customer types. The app allows customers to select their driver profile, including professional driver, auto traveler or RV customer. The app then displays custom features depending on which profile is chosen. For instance, the RV home screen provides recommended stops with RV fuel lanes.
