Colder Than Ice?

Chill Chamber chills beer as low as 22 F without freezing

ST. LOUIS -- A refrigeration system just introduced by Anheuser-Busch Inc. and Hussmann Corp. is making it possible to keep beer ultra cold longer.

The Chill Chamber uses super-cooling technology to take the temperature of beer in aluminum bottles as low as 22 degrees Fahrenheit or 10 degrees F colder than ice, without freezing it. This proprietary technology, developed by Hussmann, a business of diversified industrial company Ingersoll Rand, allows retail establishments to deliver significantly colder beer than ever available in the United States, it [image-nocss] said.

"We know today's consumers want choicesand they like their beer cold," said Gary Goldstein, vice president of on-premise national retail sales for St. Louis-based A-B.

Traditional cooling systems are unable to chill beer as low as 22 degrees F without freezing, but the Chill Chamber is able to do this with new technology, said the companies. This keeps the beer colder an average of 17 minutes longer than conventional refrigeration, they added.

The units include a large digital temperature display that communicates the product temperature to consumers. The Chill Chamber also has glass doors engineered to eliminate condensation, serving as a great display unit for the aluminum bottles and generating consumer interest in the product, they said.

The Chill Chamber comes in a variety of sizessingle chamber, double chamber and counter chamber. They are all designed to hold aluminum bottles, and the double chamber unit also holds plastic bottles. A single chamber holds approximately 10.5 cases of aluminum bottles, a double chamber unit holds 26.5 cases of aluminum or 30 cases of 16-oz. plastic bottles and the counter chamber holds 2.5 cases of aluminum bottles.

The Chill Chamber will soon be available for convenience stores and will hold approximately three cases of aluminum bottles.

Providing equipment and services to manage controlled-temperature environments for food and other perishables, Ingersoll Rand's Climate Control Technologies Sector encompasses both transport and stationary refrigeration solutions. Brands include Minneapolis-based Thermo King, a provider of transport temperature control systems, and Bridgeton, Mo.-based Hussmann, a manufacturer of refrigeration and food merchandising equipment.
