EG America laid off 90 employees on Jan. 5. as “part of a broader effort to control costs and remain competitive in an evolving retail landscape,” according to a spokesperson for the convenience-store chain.

“Each of the 90 team members impacted by this news—some of whom were located at our headquarters in Westborough, [Massachusetts,] and others in the field—are talented professionals and valued colleagues, and we are grateful for their many contributions to the company,” the spokesperson told CSP.

EG America is aiding the laid off employees with transitional support, including severance benefits, health insurance continuations and outplacement services. They will also receive priority consideration for open positions elsewhere in the company, the source said.

In 2019, following the closing of its acquisition of Cumberland Farms, EG America left the Cincinnati headquarters that it inherited from its acquisition of Kroger’s convenience-store network and moved to Westborough, the home of its more recent Cumberland Farms acquisition. The move resulted in the layoff of 200 employees at the end of the year.

The year 2023 held a lot of change for EG America. In March, the company sold 26 of its Minit Mart stores in Kansas City, Missouri, to Casey’s. Additionally, in August, EG America sold 63 convenience stores in Kentucky and Tennessee to Casey’s that operated under the Minit Mart and Certified Oil banners.

  • EG America is No. 5 on CSP’s 2023 Top 202 ranking of c-store chains by number of company-owned retail outlets. Casey's General Stores is No. 3.
