Convenience-store retailers looking for an attention boost might want to bring back a mascot from the past—or even create a new one.

Denver-based Quiznos, for example, recently said it’s reviving what CSP sister Restaurant Business calls “one of the weirdest characters in marketing history,” the Spongmonkeys.

Quiznos is aiming to garner attention via a new digital campaign with the Spongmonkeys.

“The sandwich chain, which has closed 95% of its U.S. locations over the past 15 years, is hoping to generate attention and jump aboard the nostalgia bandwagon by bringing back the oddly shaped rat-like figures in a digital ad campaign,” Restaurant Business said.

Spongmonkeys last appeared on TV ads for Quiznos in 2005.
