CHARLESTON, S.C. — Parkland USA is bolstering its fuel distribution network in the northern United States with the acquisition of a Montana-based fuel distributor.

Parkland USA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Parkland Fuel Corp., Calgary, Alberta, has signed an agreement to acquire Glendive, Mont.-based Mort Distributing, a family-owned marketer and distributor. Established in 1958, Mort Distributing supplies Exxon- and Mobil-branded fuels and lubricants and unbranded fuels to retail customers as well as to wholesale and commercial clients in the agriculture, mining, oil field, railroad and ranching businesses.

Parkland aims to gain distribution efficiencies and improve customer service in its Northern Tier Regional Operating Center (ROC) through the acquisition. Parkland USA has ROCs in Minot, N.D., and American Fork, Utah.

“This acquisition is consistent with our U.S. growth strategy and will complement and strengthen our existing Northern Tier ROC,” said Doug Haugh, president of Parkland USA, Charleston, S.C. “We look forward to welcoming the Mort team into Parkland and to continuing to deliver high-quality products and excellent service to Mort’s broad customer base.”

Parkland USA will fund the acquisition, which is slated to close by year-end 2019, with cash from operations.

Parkland USA has operations in 13 U.S. states, mostly in the Western region, and 50 company-owned stores. Its brands include Farstad Oil, Superpumper, Harts and Rhinehart Oil. It has 220 dealers under the Sinclair, Exxon, Phillips 66, Arco, Cenex and Chevron brands, as well as approximately 20 commercial locations.

The company has been on a U.S. growth tear over the past year, establishing offices in Charleston and acquiring Florida fuel distributor Tropic Oil Co. Inc. and Caribbean fuel marketer Sol. As Haugh told CSP in November, the company enters new markets first with fuels, establishing supply, logistics and transportation assets before building out a store network.
