Two technology companies are teaming up to give extra perks to drivers for DoorDash, Uber and Lyft, and the program is expected to benefit the convenience-store operators who sell gasoline and food items to the dashers.

Upside, a retail technology company that partners with about 50,000 gas and food retailers nationwide on digital marketing programs, will integrate its promotions in Payfare’s DasherDirect app for “dashers,” or gig drivers, who often receive their pay in deposits to a debit card. With the new program, they’ll receive savings on gas and food items by using the debit card, the companies said.

“At Upside, we’re driven to do all we can to drive more value to consumers and retailers, especially in today’s economic climate,” said Alex Kinnier, co-founder and chief executive of Upside said. “We’re thrilled to be working with Payfare to drive the most value possible to their cardholders, and also help brick and mortar retailers gain access to more customers at no additional cost to their business.”

The Upside Partner Platform gives partners access to application program interfaces (APIs) so they can provide Upside’s personalized promotions to their own app users. Convenience-store partners include Stinker Stores, Kum & Go and Love’s.

Payfare’s DasherDirect app provides rewards to dashers like 25-cents-per-gallon cash back on fuel and up to 45% cash back on food at the point of sale when a dasher uses the DasherDirect prepaid debit card at retailers, including convenience stores.

Upside, based in Washington, D.C., has been expanding since raising a $165 million round of venture capital funding in April 2022 for growth.
