Steal This Idea: Add State Fair Food to the Menu

Sell mouth-watering, eye-catching options to draw in customers

The top reason people attend the Iowa State Fair is the food, according to a story from CSP sister Restaurant Business.

In Minnesota, “Food is a main attraction,” Danielle Dullinger, food and beverage manager for the North Star State’s fair, told Restaurant Business. “We’re offering about 500 different menu items this year from 300 food vendors.”

With this in mind, convenience-store retailers should consider selling the more popular items from their state fairs—within reason.

It might be a bit ambitious to offer the Minnesota specialty lutefisk, featured in Asian-style lotus buns, and walleye fritter pops; however, fried cheese curds, roasted corn and Sweet Martha’s Cookie Jar cookies are within the realm of possibility.
