Steal This Idea: Spin Shortage Into a Promotion

With coffee cup supply low, Kwik Trip encourages customers to bring own receptable, get brew for 99 cents

CHICAGO  Ever enjoy morning coffee from a kangaroo’s pouch? How about a snowmobile helmet?

Kwik Trip is making the most of a bad situation, much like Stewart’s Shops in an earlier Steal This Idea, spinning supply-chain coffee-cup woes into a positive with a Bring Your Own Cup promotion.

The La Crosse, Wis.-based c-store chain, in fact, blames being out of cups on theft from an unnamed gas station. “I wish I was kidding,” Kwik Trip writes in a Facebook post.

Despite this negative, Kwik Trip is embracing the positive and encouraging customers to bring in their own cup and get any size refill for 99 cents. The c-store then playfully lists 99 receptacle ideas, such as a guitar, coconut, Pringles can and Dorothy’s ruby slippers.

“Save some money, save some paper, save some cups,” posted Kwik Trip, which last year made the CSP list of 20 Great Coffee Programs for 2021.
