The first Gas N Wash convenience store in Mokena, Ill., was designed and built on the premise of simplicity and ease, according to owner Len McEnery.

Outside, McEnery “made it simple and easy to buy fuel, save money and offer our guests three grades of gas, E85, diesel fuel and propane.

“We pride ourselves on being able to provide for all fuel needs at one location.”

The site also includes a car wash and a pet wash.

Inside the 4,000-square-foot store, McEnery made it easy to see every department. The shelving is long and sleek and placed diagonally so all the choices in the cooler and freezer doors are visible.

“If customers are running in for that gallon of milk they needed an hour ago, they can see it right as they walk through the front door,” he said.

The store also includes hot pizza; ready-to-eat sandwiches and salads; and fresh fruit.

What the Experts Say

When you have a lot going on at a site, it is important to create points of interest at the critical profit centers. Gas N Wash has a car wash, Dunkin’ Donuts, propane, gasoline and a convenience store. The way that the store stands on its own is through the design that gives it a vintage general-store feel. The use of brick and wood in the store gives it a warm and friendly appeal. This backdrop is enhanced with vintage-looking graphics and pops of color in strategic places. The gas and wash palette of colors complements the Dunkin’ color palette, but it stands apart to create a distinctive look that is unique to Gas N Wash. —Mike Lawshe, president and CEO, Paragon Solutions
