With both in-town and highway locations, the FiveStar Food Marts chain, a division of Newcomb Oil, offers fuels and food at its 74 locations—72 in Kentucky and two in Indiana. Family-owned Newcomb Oil was founded in 1924 in Bardstown, Ky., as a single location and one-vehicle distributor of Gulf Oil products. It expanded to convenience stores, but still serves as a jobber for on-road, off-road and home-heating fuels, lubricants and Houghton chemicals. Newcomb Oil distributes fuel to about 30 independent dealers.

In 2014, Newcomb Oil purchased five locations from Gate Petroleum. One is being rebuilt, two are open and the rest are undergoing rebranding. Two new stores are set to open in Paducah, Ky., by the end of the year, marking Newcomb’s first foray there. The chain plans four to five new stores in 2015 and is focused on expanding foodservice offerings.
