The Thorntons fuel brand’s market efficiency of 2.18 places it among the top 20 companies in the Fuels 50 ranking, and it priced its gasoline 3.58 cents per gallon below its market competition in 2017, according to OPIS.
Thorntons Inc. owns and operates gas stations and convenience stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and Florida. The Louisville, Ky.-based company offers all octanes of gasoline; its own proprietary brand of E15, called Unleaded15; and E85. Last year, the chain expanded E15 to more stores in Chicago, its largest market.
Tied to sales is the company’s loyalty program, which is known for its ability to “surprise and delight,” according to Boston-based GasBuddy. The program gives members exclusive offers and the ability to save money the more they visit.
Thorntons distributes its petroleum products through its wholly owned Thornton Transportation Co. and operates a bulk-storage terminal in Louisville.
