Hess is a global, integrated energy company and a leading independent gasoline convenience store retailer on the East Coast, with annual c-store revenues, excluding petroleum products, topping $1 billion. In March 2013, the company announced plans to divest its retail operations and focus on becoming a pure exploration and production company. In January 2014, Hess filed to spin off its retail unit, but said it would continue to accept bids.

Hess’ site count includes approximately 370 stations owned by its WilcoHess joint venture (Hess supplies fuel). In June 2013, Hess agreed to acquire the 56% interest in WilcoHess LLC it did not already hold from A.T. Williams Oil Co. Most of the Hess-branded gasoline stations are in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, Massachusetts and South Carolina, and most also have a convenience store.

The tobacco category is a key driver of sales and profits for Hess, with a focus on smokeless products and cigars. On the foodservice side, the chain added more than 100 Quiznos inside stores in Florida and New Jersey, with a menu designed for the c-store customer, including Quiznos signature toasted favorites and hot breakfast items. Other QSRs include Blimpie and Godfather's Pizza. All stores offer a proprietary coffee program, Mountaintop, as well as Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. Blimpie and Nathan’s Famous items are also available at stores.
