Mountain Express Oil owns or controls 166 gas stations and convenience stores, and serves more than 800 fuel centers and 27 travel centers. Its c-store banners include Fox Fuels, The Store, West Hill Ranch and Brothers Food Mart. After a management buyout and subsequent debt recapitalization in 2020, the company began growing its retail business through acquisition.

In 2021, it acquired 50 locations from New Orleans-based Brothers Food Mart and 24 retail locations from Medford, New Jersey-based Texon Oil. In 2022, it acquired 24 locations of The Store, based in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2023 and continued to operate its business as usual while restructuring. Besides its retail operations, the oil company is one of the largest fuel distributors in the South. Mountain Express has relationships with several major oil brands, including ExxonMobil, bp, Shell, Chevron, Texaco and Sunoco. Mountain Express also has a dealer joint venture with Pilot Co. in Knoxville, Tennessee.
