Giant Eagle Inc. entered the convenience-store business in 2002 when it converted 27 Crossroads convenience stores in Ohio and Pennsylvania to its GetGo brand. It built 13 small stores with fuel in its supermarket parking lots and constructed new stand-alone stores of 4,500 square feet.

Today, there are 194 GetGo convenience stores, mainly in Ohio and Pennsylvania, with a few in bordering towns in Maryland and West Virginia. The chain's latest store is a hybrid of the upscale grocery store and the convenience store, called Market District Express at 15,500 square feet. It opened in McMurray, Pa., in late 2013, with two more planned for Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio.

Giant Eagle continues to add 10 or more c-stores every year. Several dozen locations have a WetGo automatic car wash. Giant Eagle's location in Pine Township, Pa., is its first with LEED certification. In June 2014, the chain opened its first GetGo in Pennsylvania to offer beer.
