The chain is known for its commitment to the environment through its green building initiatives. All eligible Royal Farms stores are certified through the U.S. Green Building Council and through its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. It has achieved LEED certification on 20 stores by reducing energy (21% savings), water (42% savings) and lighting use, and through other sustainable strategies.

The company started in 1918, delivering milk by horse and wagon. In 1959, it opened its first “milk store.” Today, stores are known for fresh foods, especially the hand-prepared fried chicken.
