Murphy USA’s assets include seven product-distribution terminals and two ethanol-production facilities in North Dakota and Texas. The company’s retail history dates back to December 1996, when Murphy USA opened its first retail gasoline outlet in a Sam’s Club parking lot in Chattanooga, Tenn. Since then, the chain has grown to more than 1,100 outlets in more than 20 states.

In November 2006, the company opened its first 2,400-square-foot Murphy Express Store. Now there are more than 100 of the larger-format Murphy Express convenience stores in 11 states. The new stores, which are located near, but not on, Walmart lots, have the same value-price philosophy as the traditional Murphy sites but a broader product offer such as hot coffee; fountain and frozen drinks; free ATMs; beer; and many other convenience items.

The Murphy Express storefront was designed to convey speed and convenience with an open entrance devoid of barriers.

Leading a path through the center of the store and toward cold and hot dispensed beverages is warm brown tile.

The front counter in the new stores was designed to be more open and inviting, with less customer-distracting clutter.

Soft, recessed lighting spreads a cool glow throughout the store without the harshness of fluorescent bulbs of the past.

Sleek signage calls attention to areas of the store and also offers welcoming messages to customers.

As part of the new design of the Express stores, a larger variety of snacks sits on endcaps and throughout the store.

The cold-dispensed-beverage area has 24 fountain heads and eight ICEE heads for customers to choose from.

Murphy Express isn't shy about offering beverage stockup oppotunities in its c-stores.
