"Everybody" is the target customer of Roadrunner Markets, and John Kelly, vice president of operations, says that is the company's goal. Its mission, according to the company website, is “to delight the customer in a way that makes them come back tomorrow.” Although all stores have different layouts, the concept is the same: offering quality products combined with great customer service.

In 1980, the first convenience store was opened in Greeneville, Tenn. While the stores all are located in the southeast, the majority can be found in northeast Tennessee. Besides the convenience stores, Mountain Empire Oil Co. also operates two Shell-branded fuel centers located in Abingdon, Va., and Baileyton, Tenn. Many of the stores fly the Shell gasoline brand, while others are branded BP and Sunoco.

In 2010, the chain unveiled its prototype store designed to streamline its operations, expand foodservice and emphasize customer service. Decorated in red, yellow and black and measuring between 4,000 and 5,000 square feet, depending on the location, the stores also featured attached Dunkin' Donuts restaurants, adding another 2,000 square feet to the store.
