Thorntons is one of the largest privately held corporations in Kentucky, operating convenience stores with fuel, car washes and travel plazas in six Midwestern states. It is adding new stores in Chicago and plans to build more in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area of Florida.

The chain has been building its foodservice program, adding kitchens and fresh-prepared foods. It has a company-owned commissary, Fresh Serve Bakeries Inc., which provides doughnuts and other fresh-baked products to stores in the Louisville area.

Thorntons also is a supporter of ethanol fuels, offering E85 at many locations. Other environmental initiatives include adding LED lighting inside and out and offering recycling dumpsters for customers.

Q2 2015 Update

In June, Thorntons Inc. announced that it was selling eight of the company’s convenience stores as a result of a strategic review.
